MAINTAINING LONGEVITY IN THE EDUCATION INDUSTRY
Have you ever experienced a teacher or trainer who is burnt out? Have you ever had the pleasure of exposure to negative, cynical and tired teaching. I have. It wasn’t pleasant.
As an educator, teachers and trainers have the social responsibility to manage their burnout and be mindful of the power of negative emotions. Educators have a professional responsibility to look after self. Let’s face it – a happy and inspired you ensures motivation and patience. As the learning leader, an educator enthuses or inhibits learners and learning. Learning leaders need to be mindful of looking after yourself – physically, emotionally and intellectually to maintain passion for their work.
How does an educator maintain passion?
Teachers and trainers must be open to learning and be open to collaboration. In establishing and maintaining therapeutic and professional relations a teacher or trainer shares the load.
Self-care is important for teachers and trainers. Positive self care supports physical, psychological and intellectual wellbeing. Diet and exercise are important considerations for physical and psychological wellbeing. This is not rocket science but requires a commitment to our self. It is important.
Acknowledging when things fail or when you did not perform is also important. If a teacher or trainer is so afraid of making a mistake that they will not take a risk will then passion will quickly dissipate. Be brave to explore something new. Research what others have done and give it a go. Change it a bit to suit you, and try again. Be open to being wrong is important but also be open to being right.
Meet obstacles head on, but not alone. Develop networks and communities that support you. Have a safe professional group of liked minded people who can support and encourage you. People are pack animals – so find your pack. Take time to find your pack and establish the relationship. Take time you to grow.
Take a break. A work – family – fun balance is important. In order to maintain your passion you need to feed your passions. Life is meant to be fun. This is up to you to direct.
