Happiness is the meaning and purpose of life. Robert Holden. I established my Philosophy on Teaching and Learning in 2004, when I completed my Bachelor of Education. It remains the same today even though the context, the students and the learning environment have changed. I have changed, my students have changed, what I teach has changed but my philosophy remains unchanged – Teaching and Learning should be fun. In the adult learning environment, the philosophy of fun remains acutely relevant. Sometimes I succeed, sometimes I fail, but every day is a clean slate and a fresh opportunity. Barbara Fredrickson. A teacher or trainer’s role is to create a safe learning environment. This means that the facilitators responsibility is to create that safe learning environment. This environment is inclusive of the physical environment of the classroom or workplace, but essentially the safe environment needs to be internal. Students, young and old need to feel safe to learn. People will learn better when they feel valued and happy. Teachers and trainers can a safe learning environment by sharing moments of positivity. Professor Barbara Fredrickson talks about positive emotions as nutrients that expand awareness enabling a comprehensive glimpse of the whole picture. She correlates negative emotions to the sledgehammer effect- WACK! A quick consult with doctor google revealed the definition of positivity as the quality or state of being positive; something that is positive (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/positivity). Professor Fredrickson defines positivity as a mindset that helps produce emotions such as joy, amusement, happiness, serenity, gratitude and inspiration. She discusses the relationship between these moments of positivity and physical changes. Her studies have identified the fact that moments of positivity expand our physical awareness as our peripheral vision expands so that we can see more – enabling us to physically and literally, have a wider field of vision. Being able to see more allows us to physically, open our mind, inspiring more connections within our community, increasing opportunities for relationship building. More relationships enable resilience and energy that cultivates health. This is interesting research. Nothing can make our life more beautiful than perpetual kindness. Tolstoy As a facilitator of learning, teachers and trainers want to make a difference in the lives of students. Where we do, does not matter – it may be in the classroom, physical or virtual or in the workplace. With a teaching and learning philosophy of fun my goal of teaching and learning is to share knowledge, skills and wisdom in a way that motivates the intrinsic desire of the learner to discover themselves and their world, building authentic and meaningful community. For me, the best way to implement learning is to creatively entertain the group enabling a philosophy of fun. Open minds will be more welcoming of new knowledge and beliefs. Enthusiasm is more important than innate ability. Barbara Frederickson Be entertainers. Be enthusiastic. Connect with those in your learning group. Have fun. Be genuine. Create a safe learning environment – physically and psychologically.
